About this deal

While these books are mysteries, what makes them even more enjoyable is the social, cultural, and political backdrop that the author lays out for us - the good and the bad. Alvis, a single man in his early fifties, is finally comfortable admitting this to them and lets them know about his partner.

This is the most disappointing of the 32 books, for me, but many others sincerely enjoyed it, so it may just have been the mood I was in while reading, and perhaps I'm too critical. He said that one of the anti-marchers …’ Vianello paused to consider that word, shook his head, and went on, ‘… came running at the people in the parade, holding his sign stuck out in front of him horizontally, and deliberately ploughed into them. There seems to be no motive for Kavinda's killing, accounts seem to bear out that he was a good man, although there are papers in his home that make no sense.

Nobody can find him – not his daughter, not his friends, and not the woman he’d been secretly visiting.

March is one of my favorite months because that is usually when Donna Leon’s latest Commissario Guido Brunetti book is published. Desde hace ya unas cuantas entregas (“Cosecharás tempestades” es la número 32), la serie dejó de interesarme por los crímenes en sí (que también), si no que lo hace por sus maravillosos personajes, que ya siento casi como si fuesen familia. Brunetti's perusal of Kavinda's little house reveals that the caretaker was neat and clean; had an altar to Buddha; and had shelves full of books, including mystery novels and books about The Red Brigades. As with every Brunetti novel there are themes, concerns and history running through it, Leon turns her eye to Italy's modern past, the 1970's when the Red Brigades sought to create a revolutionary state using violence as a weapon against those who they viewed against them. Brunetti and his colleague, Ispettore Lorenzo Vianello, determine that Alvise did nothing wrong and manage to smooth over the incident.Reaching down to pull it out, Brunetti’s wrist is caught by the silkiness of golden hair, and he sees a small foot – together he and Vianello lift a dead girl from the water. An interesting retrospective of the 1970-80s political troubles in Italy with the Red Brigades' kidnappings and murders. By purchasing the item from Charlies Chapters Ltd you agree that you are happy to receive a revised edition. At a dinner party given by his parents-in-law, Brunetti meets Franca Marinello, the wife of a prosperous Venetian businessman. Along with the great help of his team at the Questura, an eye-opening answer to the murder of Inesh presents itself and will force Brunetti to face his own past in an unexpected way.

Neither Brunetti nor his wife Paola have ever had much sympathy for the Italian armed forces, so when a young cadet is found hanged, at Venice’s elite military academy, Brunetti’s emotions are complex: pity and sorrow at the death of a boy close in age to his own son, and contempt and irritation for the arrogance and high-handedness of the boy’s teachers and fellow students. On a Saturday in early November, Guido Brunetti, reluctant to go outside, was at home, trying to decide which of his books to remove from the shelves in Paola’s study. Making him seem even less like himself was the dark red bruise that was gathering on his left cheek and the large bloodied bandage on his forehead that covered most, but not all, of what looked like a graze wound, as though his face had been dragged along a rough surface. Years ago, some months before the birth of their daughter, he had renounced claim to what had been his study so that their second child could have her own bedroom.

The following is an exclusive excerpt from So Shall You Reap , the new novel by Donna Leon, forthcoming in March 2023, in which Commissario Brunetti investigates the murder of an undocumented Sri Lankan immigrant, which leads to the solution of a decades-old disappearance and murder. So he knows where he lived - in a house within a tangled garden belonging to the palazzo of a professor of medieval history.

The man’s mother, Alvise had told the owner, was in the hospital and not expected to live: the pasta had been so much like hers that it had broken him. But I still enjoyed it and love all the great characters, especially of course, the warm and intelligent Commissario Guido Brunetti! He saw Vianello, wearing corduroy slacks and a thick parka, waiting at the head of the line of taxis, and joined him. Every Friday Book Beginnings on Friday is hosted by Gillion at Rose City Reader where you can share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading. A heart attack seems the likely cause, but Brunetti is not so sure and decides to take a closer look. When he saw Brunetti, the Ispettore leaned forward and opened the back door of the cab, then went round and got in on the other side.
