The 6 Pro Series VI Solar Path Lights offers an elegant look to light your pathway. After the light and water test, the lights still worked. However, because of the price, we didn't feel that the performance or design justified the high price tag. They've also survived every other durability test we've thrown at them, including sharp tugs of the wires, a deep freeze at -16°C, repeated soakings and lots of bashing against a fence post.

For an affordable lighting option that adds ambianceto your outdoor space, we recommend the 33-foot-long Brightown Outdoor Solar string lights. Available in seven colors (we tested white), these fairy lights survived all of our durability tests and were easy to install, with only two stakes needed for the solar panels. And because they are solar-powered, you don’t need electricity for them to work, unlike many other outdoor string lights. Just note that they are not a great option if you want to add bright light outdoors.

Solar lights work by converting sunlight into electrical energy that is stored in rechargeable batteries and used to power the light at night. The solar panel on the top of the light absorbs sunlight during the day, which is then converted into direct current (DC) electricity by a photovoltaic (PV) cell inside the panel. They are expensive, but you do get 30m of cable; the solar charger is also good enough to keep the lights on throughout winter. These lights were often still shining at midnight, even in January. When you see an IP rating with an X in it, this means the product does not offer protection for that category. For example, IPX4 means the device is protected from water splashes in all directions, but not from dust and debris. We found the lights to give off a pleasing, beautiful glow, which was bright enough for us to read by. Keep in mind that this lamp doesn't include any additional features, making it a stylish yet very basic option. Outdoor lights work best when they have access to direct sunlight to charge for multiple hours during the day, which is how the manufacturers calculate battery life and runtime.

The DC electricity is then stored in a rechargeable battery inside the solar light, which can be used to power the light at night. When it gets dark, a sensor inside the light detects the absence of sunlight and turns the light on automatically. In the morning, when the sun rises, the sensor detects the presence of sunlight and turns the light off automatically, when it will start charging the battery again. Solar lights do not require an external power source or electrical wiring, making them a cost-effective alternative to traditional lights. They are also low-maintenance, as they do not need to be connected to a power source or have their bulbs replaced as frequently.

We noted that the only feature, aside from its solar capabilities, is an on/off switch. Our lab testing also revealed some conflicting results. On the one hand, the frosted glass shattered during our golf ball test; on the other, the solar panels still worked. The manufacturer claims the product is weatherproof and wasn’t damaged when we poured water directly above it in the lab. We also haven't noticed any issues with the light being damaged by storms so far in our real-world testing. Made of stainless steel and glass, these lights stood up to our durability testing, with no damage to the glass or solar panels. They are bright and cheery for an entryway but not as bright as other options we tested—we couldn’t read under them. With a simple, automatic dusk-to-dawn operation, these lights are simple to use but have no other features. They also need two AA batteries to operate, which eventually need replacing. However, we love their farmhouse style, affordable price, and the ability to have wall-mountable lights without needing electricity. We chose the AloftSun Solar Motion Sensor Outdoor Lights as the overall best outdoor solar lights for their durability, water resistance, and motion-sensing capabilities. If you're looking for a set of string lights, testers loved the Brightech Ambience Pro Solar Powered Outdoor String Lights, because they held up to water and freezing temperatures. And, while the bulbs are made of plastic, testers said they were clear and didn't look inexpensive. Dusk-to-dawn solar lights use sensors to automatically illuminate when daylight dwindles and should have the lights remain on until sunrise. In regions with more limited sun, especially during winter, dusk-to-dawn lights may have trouble storing enough solar energy to stay bright for an extended period each night. Our team of experts at our testing lab in Des Moines, Iowa, put 27 outdoor solar lights to the test. We assembled them, sprinkled them with water, dropped a golf ball on them (from 6 feet away on the light and from 4 feet on the solar panel), and even stashed them in the freezer for an hour to see how well they held up to cold temperatures. We also timed how long the lights stayed on from dusk to dawn.
