John describes the scenes very well and I could visually feel how putrid Jessica looked at how well he wrote. Howie and Ryan were the most sympathetic of the group due to home life backstory and feelings of not belonging, even amongst friends. You felt bad for them as the biggest bully, who you couldn't help but absolutely detest, targeted the group. I enjoyed the realistic friendships and even though the plot was full of familiar tropes, the writing kept it flowing. No one bothered to look for the grave in the forest and no one prepped for if someone were to accidentally release the demon. As far as characterization goes, it was interesting to see the group of friends be jealous of different aspects of each other’s lives. There was just the right amount of backstory about the characters to make you feel connected to them. I would only know the difference because of their family dynamic, which was talked about in the book, but there was really no reason to know about it.
