Also, I'm a huge fan of the manga series Young Kindaichi which was inspired by the book series by Seishi Yokomizo here. But I could see in some characters and the complexities of relationships and influences, where the Agatha Christie inspiration might lie. We also meet the branch family on the island (the second most powerful fishing chiefs) as well as the tide master, the doctor, the mayor, and the priest.

It's a scene from the 1970s movie version of one of Detective Kindaichi's series: The Demon's Nursery. The writing style was rather description heavy for periods, which is a drawback for me and the sleuth, Kindaichi, was quite frustrating in his reluctance to tell people about his mission (even when the bodies kept dropping). What concerns him is the cryptic comment his friend made about the well-being of his half sisters after his death.Yokomizo also drew a lot of elements from transitional Japanese art and used them on the murder mystery, and the result is just gorgeous! Chimata-san had in fact asked Kindaichi to go to Gokumon and save his three stepsisters whom he believed would be killed once he is dead. The English translation is smooth and easy to follow (always a feat in noir), and the detailed descriptions of time and place orient the reader well. The plotting is complex, the characters are interesting, both individually and in relationship to others. Haiku is also something we see a lot of in the book, and which has a part to play in the plot as well, though I won’t say what for that will be a spoiler.If fans of Agatha Christie haven't yet discovered Seishi Yokomizo, they have a treat waiting for them. This is a shame as the crime has a wonderfully unusual motivation and there is a surprisingly powerful moment of emotional poignancy at the end. Death on Gokumon Island" (nearly) has it all: inexplicable murders, a good main character, red herrings, interesting characters and relationships, as well as a vivid post-WWII Japan. Anyway, this is why I say I'm probably done with this series, because this book is widely regarded as one of the author's best.
