Found this to be a great release mainly for the book style and retro inspired art work the 4K restoration is not perfect but tbh it will never be due to its original quality but it still does not Impact the enjoyment of the movie and as everyone has stated one of jcvd’s best movies! Still, it's hard to complain really as, for the most part, it looks pretty glorious for Van Damme's '88 breakthrough. The very fact it's on 4K, and in pretty damn decent shape, should be celebrated, and if you're there for the action and the film, you'll soon sit back and enjoy comfortably the most glorious presentation it's ever had, with WCG and HDR (Dolby Vision and, reportedly, even HDR10+ are available too) coming into play to breathe life into the colour palette, the red and yellow sashes, the ever-burning flames, the shorts and outfits, and gold embroidery.
I thought the Kalifornia one was from Infinity and Capelight, but I confused that - it´s from Capelight only. Along with a fabulous roster of extra features, there's only really one question - which version will you pick up? Van Damme's had a hell of a career - cheap but endearing apocalyptic sci-fi action in Cyborg, double Van Damme craziness in Double Impact, TimeCop, Maximum Risk and more, almost hitting the big time alongside Dolph Lundgren in Universal Soldier, with his John Woo actioner Hard Target one of the finest in his filmography.
Capelight's excellent extras package translates over here too, with a whole host of extra features ported to the 4K disc proper, headlined by an Audio Commentary and including a number of great new interviews by the main production crew. Dialogue remains well prioritised (even the obviously dubbed / ADR work), taking precedence where required, whilst effects enjoy the bustle of the Hong Kong streets, the car noises, crowds, splashing across boats, and - of course - the painful body blows that dominate the fight sequences and land with suitably engaging LFE impact. It's celebrated as inspiring not only the entire Mortal Kombat game and movie franchise, but also influencing and popularising what we now know of as mixed martial arts and UFC. Most fans will get a veritable kick out of revisiting this action classic in easily the best shape it has ever been in, whilst those looking hard for trouble will probably find a smidge too much softness around the edges. Mediabooks for this are classy, I dislike the taller DVD size dimensions though, Plaion's Phantasm UHD has the Blu ray height dimensions I like better. Yeah, it’s cheesy, but the martial arts set pieces are done very well and the overall theme of the film will give you that “feel good factor” at the end.
