About this deal

For the purposes of this review, I will only be focusing on the Super Deluxe 3CD + DVD box set and the 3LP Special Edition versions. though my copy has consistent white noise throughout every song exept “All Apologies” the mastering itself is really great, it sounds super punchy and detailed and warm and a lot more aggressive and grungy than the digital version. As I already mentioned, the Super Deluxe Edition of In Utero is a four-disc set made up of three CDs and a DVD. I thought they were going to overcompress it, fill it with needless bullshit, and charge way too much for it. Marking thirty years since its release in 1993, Nirvana’s third and final album ‘In Utero’ gets the deluxe reissue treatment.

I think it is generally accepted that it’s best to use a master tape for such a process, if it is still available, since it seems to provide the benefit of making the reissue sound as close to the original as possible with the added benefit of providing a higher quality listening experience that is more in line with where the specifications of today’s technology are currently at. Adding and removing tracks alters the flow of an album which in turn can make for an inaccurate representation of how the album actually was supposed to sound. Personally, I feel that when I have an album from a band I like in my music collection I want it to be as accurate of a rendition as possible of what the artistic vision for the album truly was.My only minor niggle is that a cd that is in a cardboard sleeve maybe could do with being sent out in sturdier packaging. I normally don’t say vinyl truly sounds different in a good way to it’s streaming release but I much prefer the way this pressing is mixed, everything feels more present than what we have on streaming. Certainly, having a full color picture of it enlightened me to what it was I had been looking at on the back of this album for all those years. I feel it also, quite often, provides fans a higher quality listening experience depending on where the remaster comes from.

But it is still one of the most mind-blowing cuts on In Utero combining a melodic acoustic initial verse with a heavy grunge sound for the rest of the track and is another that is amongst Nirvana's finest ever songs and the single version - released almost a decade later so not to make money from Cobain's untimely death - was remixed anyway. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. In Utero is a howling, defiantly punkish recording, an unsentimental throwback to an era of garage band epiphanies and raw, unadorned rock and roll. The real treat here is the second disc, which features an entirely new mix of the album, also done by original album producer Steve Albini.Essentially In Utero is an uncommercialised Nevermind with Cobain's chaotic lifestyle at the time being reflected in lyrics.

To celebrate/cash-in on the 20th anniversary of In Utero, Universal made four different versions of the album available. As with several of my other albums, I carelessly lost it when I transitioned out of my old vehicle and into my new one since I kept a large portion of my music in my vehicle back then for use in it’s CD player. Remastering/reissuing albums does tend to offer several benefits, though, including breathing new life back into a classic piece of music and putting it back into circulation for a wider audience to appreciate.Certain items can take longer to source than the estimated week, particularly during busy trading periods and may take longer to arrive at our warehouse. Finally, my one issue with this particular pressing is that the digital download code gives you downloads for the original mixes, not the ones on this vinyl. Having successfully brought grunge to the mainstream with 1991’s airwave dominating Nevermind, and its lead anthem, ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, Nirvana felt they needed to claw back some much needed punk rock credibility for 1993’s In Utero. Very Ape is even more aggressive and menacing, while the noise-rock intensity of of Radio Friendly Unit Shifter is even more in effect.

With the talented Steve Albini recording it is loud and noisy rock but crucially spliced with Cobain's mesmerising gift for melody which ensured that Nirvana were not tuneless like some of their peers - though Soundgarden had some great singles - and by far the leading grunge band. Celebrating In Utero’s 30th, the 2CD Deluxe Edition features the album newly remastered plus 14 previously unreleased live tracks from the ‘93/’94 In Utero tour.

Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. So as you can probably imagine, I was more than a bit trepidatious when details started to leak out about the In Utero 20th Anniversary Edition.
