In the UK, the song failed to chart at first, then went to #7 in 1972, re-peaked at #4 in 1982, and did it again in 1992 at #45. Ironically again, the album was about the only Clapton album that failed to chart in the UK. The sublime single UK Layla / Bell Bottom Blues also failed to chart. Layla subsequently won a NME poll in the 70’s as the best single of all time! It made a lofty no 71 in the states. Re-released in the UK in July 1972 it made no 7. He returned with a proper album in 1989 with Journeyman, that smashed. Despite its #16 peak, it sold 3 million in the US, and did very well elsewhere, adding for 6.37 million. At the start of October, he had already recorded 4 more major albums. After years of heavy work, undesired fame and toxic love, Clapton burned out, isolating himself and suffering drug and alcohol addictions.
