Hile, Kevin S. "Harper Lee" in Authors and Artists for Young Adults, Gale Research 13 (August 1994) ISBN 978-0-8103-8566-5 Absent mothers and abusive fathers are another theme in the novel. Scout and Jem's mother died before Scout could remember her, Mayella's mother is dead, and Mrs. Radley is silent about Boo's confinement to the house. Apart from Atticus, the fathers described are abusers. [73] Bob Ewell, it is hinted, molested his daughter, [74] and Mr. Radley imprisons his son in his house to the extent that Boo is remembered only as a phantom. Bob Ewell and Mr. Radley represent a form of masculinity that Atticus does not, and the novel suggests that such men, as well as the traditionally feminine hypocrites at the Missionary Society, can lead society astray. Atticus stands apart as a unique model of masculinity; as one scholar explains: "It is the job of real men who embody the traditional masculine qualities of heroic individualism, bravery, and an unshrinking knowledge of and dedication to social justice and morality, to set the society straight." [73] Laws, written and unwritten Horowitz is a master of misdirection, and his brilliant self-portrayal, wittily self-deprecating, carries the reader through a jolly satire on the publishing world." —Booklist After Hawthorne, Horowitz, and others questioned Abbott about Charles and Helen’s deaths, Abbott left what appeared to be a suicide note in his home. He jumped to his death from a cliff, making it appear that he had committed the murder. Chilton, Martin (February 4, 2015). "Robert Duvall hails return of Harper Lee". The Telegraph. London, England: Telegraph Media Group Limited. Archived from the original on January 10, 2022 . Retrieved July 13, 2015.

The following version of the novel was used to create this study guide: Horowitz, Anthony. A Line to Kill. Harper, October 19, 2021. Kindle. Those attending the festival, as well as the local police, believed the crime was solved when Derek Abbott, a man who had worked for Charles, seemed to admit to the murder. Abbott, who had just been fired by Charles, had been arrested and questioned by Hawthorne in the past for child pornography and having sex with minors. The police were only able to convict him of possession of pornography. While Abbott was in police custody, his left leg was permanently injured when he fell down a flight of stairs. He claimed Hawthorne pushed him.In this story, Hawthorne and Horowitz are invited to an “exclusive” yet low-rate Penguin Random House literary festival on a small island off the south coast of England. No noteworthy author has been invited, because well, all the famous authors turned them down. Other guests include a children’s book author Anne Cleary (NOT to be confused with the real life and wonderful children’s author Beverly Cleary), blind psychic Elizabeth Lovell, war historian George Elin, a French performance poet Maissa Lamar and TV Chef Marc Bellamy. None of these speakers are expected to draw crowds, which is why imitation Horowitz is flummoxed as to why they are attending. A Line to Kill was a very clever, suspenseful and compelling murder mystery that I thoroughly enjoyed '

Alison Flood (February 5, 2015). "Harper Lee's 'lost' novel was intended to complete a trilogy, says agent". The Guardian. In 2018, a new adaptation was written by Aaron Sorkin, debuting on Broadway. [178] The Broadway production was nominated for nine Tony Awards, winning one. [179] Graphic novel Forget about solving all these crimes; the signal triumph here is (spoiler) the heroine’s survival. Fleming, Anne Taylor (July 9, 1976). "The Private World of Truman Capote", The New York Times Magazine. p. SM6.The sleuth and the scribbler are there to promote the first of their three proposed Inspector Hawthorne novels. Horowitz sums up the rest of the event’s participants: “an unhealthy chef, a blind psychic, a war historian, a children’s author, a French performance poet. . . . Not quite the magnificent seven.” Then there’s Charles le Mesurier, the online-gaming entrepreneur bankrolling the event, a wealthy and boorish figure who patronizes or taunts most of the men he meets and, though married, puts the moves on every pretty woman. You always feel that Anthony Horowitz has such fun with this series, and he has a great group of suspects, from a spiritualist, to a children's author, a celebrity chef and a French performance poet. On the island, there is a row going on about a power line and this has created bad feeling between the locals. When there is a murder, it is up to Hawthorne to unravel the motives and there are many. The local police are unequipped to deal with a homicide and Hawthorne is asked to help investigate the murder. So Hawthorne and Horowitz have another case to solve.
