About this deal

Take a lesson from it then. It could happen to you. When I go I shall have my family about me – daughters – sons – my husband, grey and distinguished, dabbing a handkerchief to his lips …’ With this approach, we hope we have ensured the life of the building for another 100 years, and for many more chapters in its story.

The Bottle Factory has now been adopted into Southwark’s conservation area which will mean it stands the test of time while the area surrounds are being lost to residential redevelopment. The Bottle Factory Outing is a novel inspired by Bainbridge's own experience of working in a bottling plant. At times offbeat, the humour is mingled with moments of poignancy particularly in the final scenes as the workers gather at a bizarre party in the factory attic. We have four different size bottles to choose from, as such you can tailor the bottle size and shape specifically to suit your needs. You can choose from several different colours (5 colours available) of sports bottles. You also have the option to choose the colour of the cap (7 colours available), and with our fantastic printing facilities you can have your own artwork or logo printed on them to perfectly promote your business/school/club. Two words come to mind: absurd and squalid. At the end of the novel, one can appreciate its tight construction, so wonderfully bookended and foreshadowed, but it’s one of the least predictable books I’ve ever read. The story line revolves around an outing that Freda has engineered in an effort to spend more time with Vittorio. Brenda wants no part of the outing or Freda's plan but the ever optimistic and slightly bullying Freda lives by the following philosophy: A string vest?’ said Brenda dubiously, and Freda couldn’t explain – it would have been wasted on her.

I think I may have gasped when I finally caught up on the implications of the following statement about Freda and Brenda’s sharing a sleeping space in their dingy bedsit: It was unfair. She told her so. ‘I always wanted to live in a house with a big kitchen. I wanted a mother in a string vest and a pinny who made bread and dumpling stew.’ The masterful restraint of Beryl Bainbridge’s sentences reveals an author in complete control of her artistry’ GuardianSuperb… taut in construction, expansive in characterisation, vibrant in atmosphere and profoundly comic’ The Times A successful planning application established use as commercial and industrial accommodation. We then started extensive restoration and refurbishment to create a flexible, creative campus for modern occupiers. Patiently Freda explained that it wasn’t a bottle factory, it was a wine factory – that they would be working alongside simple peasants who had culture and tradition behind them. Brenda hinted that she didn’t like foreigners – she found them difficult to get on with. Freda said it proved how puny a person she was in mind and body.

Probably two stars for my personal enjoyment of it and four for its actual quality – so, three as a compromise. (And I still intend to read more Bainbridge!) Oh, it's delicious. It's like a French movie in a book: you know it's over because the credits roll up the screen. Freda is loud, large and domineering whilst Brenda is compliant, quiet, serious, educated and desperate not to give offence - despite a less than attractive description, and to Freda’s chagrin - Brenda also seems to attract numerous male admirers who try to possess her. Brenda, who was easily embarrassed, didn’t care to be seen gawping at the window. She declined to look at the roof of the hearse, crowned with flowers like a Sunday hat, as the coffin was shoved into place.

She didn’t look as if she’d had a full life,’ said Brenda. ‘She only had the cat. There weren’t any mourners – no sons or anything.’ Overall area-weighted U-value Largely uninsulated but 15% improvement on existing fabric where updates Bainbridge's story is set in a small Italian-run factory somewhere in London which bottles wines and some spirits. Freda and Brenda are two members of the workforce , working alongside some middle aged Italians who clean and label the bottles for despatch. The pair share a workbench by day and a miserable bedsit room by night. They also share a bed though they build a wall of books to ensure there is a clear demarkation of space on the mattress. Provides two print areas for your artwork/logo; a band of 22.78cm x 1.2cm around the top of the bottle and a main print area of 22.78cm x 13.24cm

It put me in mind of my hazy recollections of Play For Today (1970s BBC adult drama TV programme), or the more playful work of Mike Leigh and Ken Loach. It is quintessentially English, and also makes some very astute observations about culture, class, desire, difference, gender differences and human relationships. When life gives you lemons but you've got no sugar and the water is tainted, say goodbye to the lemonade... Maybe today,’ Freda said, ‘Vittorio will ask me out for a drink.’ She looked at Brenda who was lying down exhausted on the big double bed. ‘You look terrible. I’ve told you, you should take Vitamin B.’ The first half of the book is largely comic, but the outing takes a macabre turn, which I won't spoil. The whole thing builds to a very satisfying conclusion, and is a pleasure to read.By consolidating the manufacturing and printing processes in the one location, we reduce the carbon footprint normally associated with this business. We're also pleased to say that we've achieved an impressive 35% recycle rate whilst managing to maintain our exceptionally high standards of quality, something that's difficult to achieve in this industry.
