The Village of Indian Head Park in conjunction with the Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways (DoTH), has initiated a Preliminary Engineering and Environmental (Phase I) Study for 2.3 miles of Wolf Road from 79th Street to Plainfield Road. Twelve year old Tuuli is a member of a talo, a small tribe of connected families. She lives with her parents, ten year old brother and her cousins, aunts and their partners. Their talo are reindeer people, “sustained by the reindeer, connected with the reindeer”. They are followed by a woman law officer that is determined to bring in Elka and Trapper (who is following Elka on her journey.) As I finished the book, I was left feeling wrung out, but with a great appreciation of this novel, with its authenticity, and even with its flaws. It’s very grim but it has heart. The book has a lot of suspense, and it was hard to put down once it got going; there was so much danger and tension that it was hard for me to take a breath for long periods. On the run from Trapper and Lyon, Elka journeys across post-apocalyptic British Columbia in search of her parents. The wilderness is what she knows and trusts; people are far too dangerous.

The book has a sort of icy, pulse-pounding tempo to it that I found impossible to put down. I read it more or less in one sitting. The ending in particular was absolutely flawless. When I finished it I actually clapped a couple of times.

it’s a gritty and funny and strong debut, and i would really like to read her second book, Bitter Sun, although it looks like it hasn't been published in the US yet, so i guess i can put it off for now AND THIS IS HOW THE SLIPPERY SLOPES HAPPEN! The best thing about The Wolf Road is the voice. Main character and first-person narrator Elka is one badass bitch. She wasn't raised by wolves, but might have been better off if she had been.
