When Ella Longfield overhears two attractive young men flirting with teenage girls on a train, she thinks nothing of it—until she realises they are fresh out of prison and her maternal instinct is put on high alert. But just as she’s decided to call for help, something stops her. The next day, she wakes up to the news that one of the girls—beautiful, green-eyed Anna Ballard—has disappeared. I love a good unreliable narrator story, and the changing POV of this one made sure I never knew who to suspect. There were many twists and hints to the culprit along the way, which I missed while reading. The ending was satisfying and all questions were answered! Turning on the TV she is floored to see a broadcast talking about one of the girl's she saw on the train. Ella was a mother and a florist. Upon the disappearance of Anna, Ella was reprimanded for not doing anything regarding what happened that night on the train.

I've read two other novels by the talented Teresa Driscoll, The Friend and The Promise (my favorite), which were both thrilling five star reads and this one is another winner! I Am Watching Youis about the circumstances relating to a missing 16-year old girl, Anna, who travels to London by train with her best friend, Sarah. The mystery starts on the train, where Ella, “the witness,” sees two teenage girls flirting with two men; when Ella realizes the men are fresh out of prison, her own sensibilities and judgements are put on high alert. Ella regrets not trying to “help” the two minors the very next day when she wakes up to the news of Anna missing. When Anna’s anniversary appeal is televised one year later, it becomes clear that her friends and family all have secrets and guilt to hide. So many hidden secrets from a wide array of great characters, great tension, gripping and well told especially from the main character Ella. Driscoll follows several people throughout the book. The chapters are titled "The Witness (Ella), The Father (Henry), The Friend (Sarah), The Investigator (Matthew) and Watching....no spoilers to who that is. The ending. As usual, it is always nice to feel that I am wrong about the villain. This book gives me that. However, it feels like the author rushed to reveal the villain and did not give enough time to give more plot about it or explore his character. Final Thoughts

THE FRIEND — The other POV was Sarah who is the friend traveling together with Anna on the train. The guilt and secrets that Sarah kept to herself about what happened to them that night were clear as day from the very beginning. That's the feeling I got which reading this book! The creepy crawling sense that someone is watching....

This book was part of my #21readsin2021 challenge, where I’m trying to get through 21 books I bought/received in 2020 but didn’t get to. Progress is slow but I’ve finished 9/21 of those reads! I’ll certainly have a similar list for 2021 though. I Am Watching You by Teresa Driscoll ended up being one of those thriller reads that to me just wasn't as thrilling as I hoped it would be. There are a few reasons I could think of that kept me from completely becoming immersed in the story and on the edge of my seat like I prefer to be in this type of book. I thought maybe a part of that would be the simple explanation of the huge time jump shortly after the story began. Jumping a year into the future after a person goes missing seems to leave little hope for a good outcome so as much as I was still a bit curious it failed to really grab me just at that point early in the book. I became frustrated when all of the side stories and perspectives led to nowhere; however, I do believe this was intentional. In the Author’s Note, Driscoll establishes her experience with real life crime when she explains that she worked as a journalist in England, specifically with cases related to crime. Teresa admits she was “deeply affected by the impact of crime on so many ordinary lives—not just innocent victims but also witnesses.” This sentiment is reflected throughout the theme of I Am Watching You, with the focus being primarily on how the disappearance of Anna haunted her friends and family so much that their lives were on standstill as they became blinded by their own trauma and guilt.
