Without going into the actual spoilers, much of the eerieness and creepiness derives from Remy and Alicia in the first 4/5 of the novel. The two are unlikeable and bizarre from the start, not only because of their obsession with Jen but with how they speak and communicate with each other.

Both Remy and Alicia feel so uncanny and eerie that it’s disquieting to read, an ironic feeling considering Remy later accuses someone else of acting “like a lizard in a human suit. It’s simply so strange that you cannot put it down because you need to figure out where the hell the story is going. When they encounter Jen in real life and get whisked into her orbit, what seems like a dream come true gradually turns into a psychedelic nightmare. Alicia, for her part, makes everyone uncomfortable, touching Jen at every opportunity and oversharing trauma: “‘I was actually’ — and here Alicia raises a finger as if bragging — ‘one of the youngest bulimic patients at the recovery center! His previous analysis of social interactions transforms into a different type of interpretation, this time, interpreting coincidences and others’ words and actions as “signifiers” trying to point him towards his “consummate result,” or his fate. I have spent some time bemoaning how little What The Actual Fuck fiction there is written by women out there, but I just read two in a row (the other was the very different but also delightful NIGHTBITCH by Rachel Yoder) and I couldn't be happier. B. Fisketjon, “a healer, lifestyle expert, and spiritual counselor,” the book describes manifesting the energy of the universe to become the ultimate version of yourself. These pages and Beth Morgan’s creative writing are full of surprises and breaks the mold of a traditional story. Reading A Touch of Jen was one narrative left turn after another一as soon as I got in a groove of where the plot was going, Morgan shifted lanes to a different reality entirely.

Jen is horrified by Alicia’s metamorphoses, a thinly veiled mimicry of Jen, and the couple verbally lash out at Alicia before leaving. Jake is friendly and lovable, but would he try so hard to be Remy’s upbeat confidante if he were truly comfortable in his selfhood?
