Description

For that reason and others, this memoir of Colonel Hans von Luck is a deeply personal one and, at many points, particularly during the many reunions at the end, I found myself deeply moved. Not that I doubt Luck's personal conduct — I'm sure he was a conscientious commander who followed the Geneva Convention.

Luck was assigned to the 21st Panzer Division, stationed in Brittany and commanded by Edgar Feuchtinger.A new threat was already emerging, with Patton threatening to create yet another pocket, south of the Seine River. Luck spent the next years serving in various armoured units, and traveled extensively around Europe when on leave. In January 1945, when the division was moved to the Oder front, the division took part in fighting along the Reitwein Spur.

In the meantime, join the Stoessi’s Heroes group on Facebook and possibly also our Facebook page, so that you don’t miss any announcements for new releases. Napier stated that an officer of the 2nd Fife and Forfar wrote in his memoirs "of his surprise at seeing a German officer in dress uniform surveying the battlefield from Cagny". Advancing without infantry support, the armour units were unable to overcome the entrenched antitank guns. After internment for five years at a Gulag in Georgia, pressure from the allies resulted in the repatriation of many German soldiers in captivity, and Luck was among those released.

On 9 September Luck's command reached Strasbourg, where it was attached to General Hasso von Manteuffel's Fifth Panzer Army. It is a about the memories and experiences of a man who happened to be involved in the Battles of Poland, France, Eastern Front, Africa, D-Day, and the final attempt to stop the Russians at the Halbe. So in August he was assigned to the Panzer Reconnaissance School in Paris, where he taught new officers the tricks of the trade. On 1 June the Afrikakorps had managed to disengage, and Luck could finally be evacuated to a field hospital, while Rommel resumed the attack on the British positions south of Gazala. Kasnije, kad sam počeo da se interesujem za istoriju, bilo mi je žao što ne mogu da razgovaram sa njim o njegovim vojničkim danima.
