Description

Paedyn Gray witnessed the king kill her father five years ago, and she’s been thieving and sleeping rough ever since, all while faking Psychic abilities. All the Dead Lie Down follows the story of Marin who becomes the nanny to her mother's former childhood friend/famous horror novelist. This gothic story merges horror and a lovely queer romance with a helping of the fantastical in what is ultimately a story about grieving, secrets, and belonging.

The pacing and characterisation was spot on and there wasn’t a moment I was bored or felt like scenes were unnecessary.I’m going to admit that I was very bored most of the time but it still wasn’t a bad book, if that makes sense. The house is inhabited by famous horror novelist Alice Lovelace, her three daughters (Evie, Wren, and Thea Hallowell), and their caretaker, Neera. I get that she has no one and nowhere to go, but to be honest they did offer to help her if she chose to leave. An aspect that took me out multiple times was that the teen characters often had dialogue that made them sound much older, while the children characters were more inconsistent, at times seeming very much their young age and other times sounding more like teenagers. Tremendous new thriller from the award-winning author of UNDER THE BEETLE’S CELLAR and THE RED SCREAM, and once again featuring indomitable Molly Cates as the feisty, funny, flawed heroine. The finale in the flooded basement and underground crypt (I do love a spooky crypt – happy sigh), is excitingly written, powerfully dramatic, and very creepy. one girl is doing everything in her power to get marin to leave, and the other is much nicer, but still really creepy. If you liked What Moves the Dead by T Kingfisher, House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin Craig I think you’ll really like this one. The slow unraveling of all the mysterious secrets held by the family, and the confines of their secluded property, left me hooked until the very end.Evie also holds the answers to: The horror in the woods, the forest cemetery, the secrets the House hides, her father’s tragic drowning, Alice’s increasingly destructive behaviour, why death seems to stalk the family. McCauley does a great job describing the scenes and making the reader have a sense of overall dread in a good way.
