After working under Nicky Haslam for nine years, Heuman decided to open her eponymous studio in 2013. Having familiar items from way back makes me feel more connected to my house in London but also to my home in Sweden and growing up.

The highly anticipated debut monograph from one of today's leading designers championing playful, original interiors infused with Scandinavian flair. The client said her granny once had a similar kitchen and the style immediately connected her to her own childhood.

The best interiors gift I’ve ever received was a completely bespoke, hand-painted panoramic wallpaper for our dining room in Sweden. Our home was everything to me and that feeling— that this one place can encompass all that you need—has never left me.You need to remember that people will live in these houses all year round; they will be in different moods and at different points in their lives. Regularly featured in leading publications such as T Magazine, Elle Decor, and British Vogue, Heuman was named on AD’s Top 100 list in 2020.

From how to maximise small spaces to finding inspiration, learning what you like and knowing how to translate your own unique individuality, plus why it's important to value the sentimental, it's an invaluable tome for any budding interior decorator. So when we heard word that she had a new monograph, Every Room Should Sing, from Rizzoli, we took note. This beautifully crafted volume presents Heuman’s innovative approach in book form for the very first time. Every room screamed Beata Heuman, yet some I absolutely loved (and could move right into and never redecorate ever again) and some I loathed.

It can work very well in a restaurant or a hotel where you have an experience for a night or a few days. The wallpaper was made for the room by Tibor; the design was taken from an old biro scribble Tibor Reich did at university in Leeds in the late 1930s. Heuman cites the example of the Suffolk cottage featured in the book where she suggested a Thirties-style kitchen that reminded her of her parents’ kitchen in Sweden. I do like how Beata has had the wisdom such as “all the tabletops are rounded for a more welcoming feel and to avoid hard edges. It is soulless design with no sense of place, and because of how prescriptive this look is, it is almost impossible to add layers to, and so it mostly just stays that way.
