At the end of one scene I was absolutely convinced the “happy couple” had sex. Grace did not describe the sex only them getting hot and heavy. Then the scene ended without them parting ways prior to coitus. However, a later scene appeared to imply that they’d had coitus interruptus or self-restraint although it seemed clear that Amora has had multiple sexual partners previously. Unless I misunderstood that too. I enjoyed the liberated princess contrasting with her uptight rejected betrothed. Unfortunately, All the Tides of Fate was not as good as its predecessor. There is still some nice world building here. There is creativity with the magics, the island descriptions, and the Barracudas and Shanty are a nice touch. However, that's about where the good stuff ends.

if there’s one thing i’ve learned today while reading the entirety of this book, it’s not to trust adalyn grace anymore. she can and will hurt your soul ‘till you can feel the pain in your bones. i am a puddle of emotions and tears.

See a Problem?

Bastian: charming pirate, powerful, charismatic, witty and so far my favorite character of the book( reminds me of Colin O’Donoghue’s performance as Captain Killian “Hook”Jones at OUAT. Actually his interactions with Amora reminded me of Emma Swan and Hook’s story at the series!) Turquoise water stretches into the distance, stuffed full of blue tangs and schools of yellowtail snapper that flounder away from our ship and conceal themselves beneath thin layers of sea foam. Through the morning haze sits an outline of cloud-shrouded mountains that shape the kingdom’s northernmost island, Mornute. It’s one of the six islands I’ve not yet seen but will one day rule. THE BOOK WAS FILLED WITH TROPES and although they aren't all bad, it just made the storyline somewhat predictable. Some things about the ending surprised me but others were definitely obvious.

Absolutely nothing! - I thought really hard and I could not think of one thing I didn't like about this book. But as the plot progressed, Amora began to get on my nerves. Throughout the story, she was anything but meek. When she saw an opportunity to threaten others with her deadly magic, she gladly took it. Not even her friends were safe. And their feelings didn't matter because unlike Amora, they weren't the fated saviors of Visidia. Only those with soul magic could rule and "protect" the kingdom, and Amora didn't hesitate to the point that out.Every person—young and old—is out tonight. When the time comes for my performance, there will be no hiding from the eyes of Visidia. All the Stars and Teeth is about a princess, Amora, whose family alone possesses powerful soul magic. I’m glad to see you’re confident,” Yuriel says between gooey bites of frosted fudge. “I’ll hold you to that.” When it comes to approaching those themes, it all depends on the extent of the conversation and how deeply you delve into it. If this were an adult book, it might be a little more graphic, there might be more specific politics involved. I think with Y.A. you have to be mindful that you’re presenting something to a younger audience. You do need to say something—you can’t just put on paper "oh all these characters are dying" and think that's fine. You can’t just leave it blank, because you’re talking to a very young audience. Handling those topics with care is so important. But I also did not want to pander to the audience. They are young, but very mature. They can think about these topics for themselves. We’ve shared an experience only a few people will understand, and it’s marked our souls. The sea is a beast more fearsome than even the lusca.”

All the Stars and Teeth is not my cup of coffee. It’s more a cup of tea, well brewed, with milk and cheesy biscuits on the side. Especially when you get to the climax, where I was convinced key magical rules proved inconsistent. However, this story has action, adventure, a princess trying to be feminist who is then bound to a man against her will (cue sequel), romance… Just as the main character has lost her magic, this finale has lost some of the magic of the first book and trades more in secrets and lies than in the curious possibilities of its magical world. The magic is still cool. Especially with each island specializing in different forms and now allowed to mix them and experiment. But that's just the set dressing. Queen Amora ignores all this like she does the suitors on each island, and her friends, and lies to all her friends, all in pursuit of some seriously dangerous magic. She even tries to ignore her cursed soul connection to her love interest, Bastian. It's too bad she (or the author) didn't explore this more. It would have brought these characters closer, at least in the minds of readers. There's only a vague idea of what each senses about the other. First off, the amount of violence in these stories is a bit much. The blood lust displayed by the main character is disturbing and she never really seems conflicted about that. Maybe my expectations were too high based on that gorgeous cover but I just didn't feel the bookish obsession that I wanted. But sailing the kingdom holds more wonder — and more peril — than Amora anticipated. A destructive new magic is on the rise, and if Amora is to conquer it, she’ll need to face legendary monsters, cross paths with vengeful mermaids, and deal with a stow-away she never expected… or risk the fate of Visidia and lose the crown forever. I am Amora Montara, Princess of Visidia and heir to the High Animancer’s throne. There is no ship I cannot sail. There is nothing I cannot master. But the real power comes from bones. She smear a bone with blood or tie hair around it and tosses it into a fire and that bone in the enemy’s body is destroyed.
