Although it’s less powerful than the Hyundai HYSC1500E aerator on paper, it doesn’t feel that way in the garden. The Einhell’s 1200 W motor could probably cope with larger gardens as well, even though the machine is designed for smaller areas. Thanks to stable construction and durable materials the tool is made of, this aerator is ideal for application on dry soil. Due to a metal design, the Kingfisher RC401 stands strong against the extended use in heavy-duty conditions and will deliver as new even after years of regular use. Besides, it is capable of digging into the soil much deeper than most of its peers with thinner and finer tines. If using a hollow tine or plug lawn aerator, you will have a number of soil plugs left over on your grass when you’re done. These are usually aerator/scarifier combo products and not strictly aerators in the purest sense. They are very powerful and do not require a lot of tiring work from you to operate. The problem with these lawn aerators is that they can tear up your lawn pretty badly. I’d normally recommend taking a look at the VonHaus 2 in 1 or the Einhell RG-SA 1433: Einhell RG-SA 1433 electric scarifier and lawn aerator

The best time of year to aerate a lawn is during the spring. This is when the soil is becoming warm again, your grass is growing, and there is no chance of frost forming in the holes you create. Your grass will get the maximum benefit from aeration when it’s growing at its strongest. You can go for a walk and improve the quality of your lawn at the same time with the Ohuhu Lawn Aerator Shoes. Each shoe has 13 solid spikes that can penetrate up to 2 inches deep. The adjustable velcro hook and loop straps keep the shoe attached to your existing boot or sturdy garden shoe. At 12 inches long and 5 inches wide, they can fit most adults' shoes. We also like that they are also easy to store in a shed or outdoor storage bin and require no assembly (aside from attaching to your shoes!). There are anti-slip pads on the part of the shoe that connects to the sole of your own shoes, helping to prevent slipping. However, this spike aerator still takes a bit of effort to push. It’s still best to use it when the lawn is slightly wet.

Choosing an aerator type – hollow tined, spiked, manual or machine?

Electric scarifier with three-in-one functions of scarifying, aerating and grass catching for a one-stop lawn care machine. This product was easy to assemble and the instructions weren’t totally horrendous, which is usually the case these days, and the adjustable handles and collection bag all fitted on without any bother. It’s best practise to aerate your lawn now in late Autumn, as that will give your lawn a few weeks for it to recover before winter strikes. By using this type of tine aerator, it will allow water and air to circulate better through it. It also ensures heavy rainfall won’t ruin your lawn, which can easily be caused by waterlogging.

Rolling aerators are great because they allow you to aerate your lawn efficiently, without the cost of buying an electric walk-behind aerator. The shoes have anti-slip pads on the bottom to help prevent them from slipping off your boots on wet grass. Plus, the shoes come with a steel shovel you can use to clean out dirt from between the spikes when needed. Overall, we think this aerator might not be the best option for a large lawn, but we think it's great for smaller lawns as long as you don't mind the extra effort. One that’s pretty sensible is the BMC Lawn Aerator: BMC Lawn Aerator– worth a look if you’re interested in a spike roller A good rolling aerator will have a telescopic handle, which you can adjust to change the height to suit depending on how tall you are.

Lawn aerator buyer’s guide

Using spiked lawn aerators, that pierce the ground, will allow air to reach grass roots as well as water. Grass roots will become stronger which will lead to a healthier lawn that’s better able to withstand heat and drought. One of the best things about this aerator is how durable it is. The tines are easily replaceable if needed, and the body of the aerator is extremely solid. There’s a small area where you can place your foot so your weight will sink the tines into the soil. This lawn aerator/ scarifier has adjustable working heights and there are 3 levels to choose from. This is handier for the scarifier than the aerator but it is still a nice feature to have. Just be careful to get the settings right and maybe try them out on a separate patch of grass first so you don’t destroy your lawn accidentally.

As you can see, there’s a lot to love about this machine. It’s relatively hard to find flaws with its performance, but there are a couple of points to mention in terms of design. Firstly, the power cable is only 4.5 m long, so an extension cable will almost certainly be required, and the 28 L collection box is also relatively small. For these reasons, despite its powerful motor, it’s only suitable for smaller spaces. This is another pitchfork-style plug aerator, similar to the Yard Butler aerator we looked at previously. The difference? This aerator is three times the price. Although this Swardman Professional Stainless Steel Hollow Tine Lawn Aerator is more expensive than the other hollow tine aerators featured here, it’s been designed to last a lifetime. It’s made from pure stainless steel and has three hollow tines that are easy to empty.
