Not all GoPros support these remote controls. The HERO7 Silver and White, for instance, do connect to the mobile app but won’t let you connect a remote control. Same with the HERO (2018). And some older GoPros, in particular, won’t work with the Bluetooth connection or voice commands of the Remo. Perhaps the best upgrade over the original smart remote comes in the form of increased battery life, thanks to the newly implemented Bluetooth® Low Energy. The whole pairing process is also faster than before. And on the side is the settings/preset button and a shooting mode button. The mode button cycles through the capture mode such as video, photo, time lapse, etc. Press the [Menu Button] repeatedly to move to [Connection Settings], then press the [Shutter Button] to select it. In the Wi-Fi menu, press the [Mode Button] until [Wi-Fi RC] is highlighted and then press the [Shutter Button] to select it.

Press the [Mode Button] repeatedly until the [Settings Icon] (wrench) appears; press the [Shutter button] to enter Settings. If they fail to connect, make sure that the camera’s wireless connection is enabled. Find this under Preferences > Connections > Wireless Connections. It’s worth noting that leaving the wireless feature enabled will contribute to some power drain of your camera’s battery. In Use The Remote is the successor to GoPro’s existing Smart Remote, which is compatible with older cameras and offers superior specs in certain areas — it has a range of up to 600 feet (180m), it can control up to 50 cameras at a time, and it’s waterproof down to 33 feet (10m). If you see [Detach current remote?] Highlight and select [Yes]. After that, you should see two arrows moving towards each other on the camera’s screen. This means that the camera is in pairing mode. Note – the camera is in pairing mode only when its screen shows the two arrows moving towards each other. Press the [Power Button] on the side of the BacPac to show the Wi-Fi menu on the camera’s front LCD screen. Note – another way to get to the Wi-Fi menu is by using the [Power and Shutter Button] on the camera to find it in the camera’s Settings menu. Remember that the Settings menu is represented by a wrench icon, and the Wi_Fi menu is represented by a wireless signal icon.Removing the other buttons from the face has also made for a bigger, higher resolution screen. This reduces the chances of needing to squint to see your camera status. Since I originally posted this, GoPro has discontinued the Remo. I’m not particularly surprised, honestly. Several times I ran into reliability issues when using it even just as a button remote with the voice aspect. And based on reports from other users that accumulated online, I’m not the only one. So unless you really need the voice control, I’d recommend steering towards the Smart Remote over the Remo. In the Wi-Fi menu, press the [Mode Button] until [REM CTRL] is highlighted, and then press the [Shutter Button] to select it.

There are four buttons. On top is the power button. It’s straightforward. Just press to turn on. To turn it off, hold the button for two seconds. If you need the remote itself to be waterproof, you’ll be wanting the The Remote, Smart Remote, or Remo. If you’re using a GoPro in damp conditions, these models are all waterproof. The remote is rated down to 16 feet (5 meters). The Smart Remote is rated down to 33 feet (10 meters), while the Remo is also rated down to 16 feet (5 meters). All GoPro remotes communicate using a WiFi signal. This uses energy and it does mean you will have to recharge them using the supplied USB cable from time to time. UDPATE: Since I originally posted this, GoPro has discontinued the Remo, leaving The Remote and the Smart Remote as the only current models.) Controlling multiple cameras. I haven’t tested this myself but the smart remote allows you to simultaneously control up to 50 GoPros!

It has a built-in, non-replaceable rechargeable battery and charges via USB-C (it comes with a cable but not a charger). This is much more convenient than the unique dedicated charging attachment that some older GoPro remotes have used. GoPro has had four different remotes for their action cameras. Two of them are current models, two is an old model but you can still find it for sale in some places, and each has its own strengths and weaknesses.
