Finally, to put your mind at rest, unless you are a professional alloy wheel repair specialist in your spare time, a professional alloy wheel repair will be of a far higher quality than painting your wheels yourself. Our technicians go through an extensive training process to ensure that they produce only the very best results. This means all our work is fully guaranteed. I'm busy refurbing one of my alloy wheels and have just applied the etching primer and noticed that it states on the can that I need to wait 24 hours for the solvents to dissolve before applying a primer. I was hoping that I could apply a basecoat on top of the etching primer. Is it really necessary to apply a primer on top of etching primer?Seal and protect. To seal and protect your newly refinished wheel, it’s important to use a clear coat or sealant. This will help protect the aluminum from further oxidation and UV damage. Once you have applied the desired number of coats, allow the paint to dry completely before removing the masking tape and reassembling the wheels.
