Mount Gay Rum

I did not know anything about a Savalle column at Mount Gay, thank you very much for sharing this. Since I could not find anything about it online, may I ask you where this information comes from? Notes: Named after the year the distillery was founded (1703). This is Mount Gays premium rum. A blend of minimum 10 year old to 30 year old rums blended to show off their best product. Fermented in oak vats (many distilleries now use stainless steel) using using water filtered through the islands coral geology (limestone aquifer) from of an almost 250 ft deep well.Today, Mount Gay rums are matured in lightly charred American oak barrels that have previously been used to age American whiskey. Flavour: Slightly sweet and smoky. It is very mild and does not burn on the palate at all. I could detect vanilla, spices (cloves, nutmeg), coconut, butterscotch, cocoa and a slight woodiness. The distillery currently features four different types of stills: small Spanish and Scottish pot stills, a Coffey column still, which was introduced in the 1970s, and the most recent addition, an Irish column still. Though the distillery’s first Coffey still only dates to the 1970s, other column designs were added to the mix around the time of American Prohibition. No matter what still is being used, all distillates are co-fermented (more on that right below). There’s something familiar in the air. The spirits world loves its superlatives, and Mount Gay can claim one of the most coveted. With a deed of sale for the original plantation dated Feb. 20, 1703, Mount Gay is the oldest continuously operating commercial rum producer in the world. The team at Mount Gay strongly suspects production was going on even earlier, and has recently uncovered a deed from 1654 that might seal the case. Today, Mount Gay produces the majority of Barbadian rum that is exported globally. Old Brigand is another locally popular brand, but it’s not nearly as exported. It was a Sober family affair for centuries. In some places, time doesn’t exist. Only fellowship. And the flavour of Mount Gay Rum. These are Bajan rum shops. Springing up as if almost strategically placed across the island of Barbados.

Many of these stories weren’t believed, unless said adventurers returned with bottles or casks of Caribbean rum - bona fide proof of a sailor’s journey. They have four pots of two similar types, so definitely can produce different marques, but I strongly suspect the Barbados culture works against them for that – Barbados likes low ABV blended rum and traditional production has accommodated that. At Mt Gay they focus on consistency for export, and they also significantly reduce prior to ageing which will limit their ability to make higher ABV releases for a long time, though they do age the pot and column marques separately so can do pure still releases as the origin series showed. And could you please elaborate on your comment about the odd design of the WIRD pot stills? It is very hard to find pictures online and what I find never shows a complete still. A premium Rum from a premium Rum maker that can lay claim to starting it all. Blended entirley from treasures of Mount Gay's prized reserves, each aged for 10 to 30 years, It is a master piece of perfect sumptuousness, nectar created by the oldest producer of refined rum in the world. Exceptionally luminescent, it presents a deep, rich bouqueut of oak, toffee and leather, seamlessly intertwined with mellow notes of ripe banana, candied fruits and soft spices, melting slowly into a smooth lingering finish. OVER 65 visitors were in Barbados (17–21 February 2010) enjoying a welcomed break from their cold countries thanks to Remy Cointreau, the parent company of Mount Gay Rum.

Some of the blend is double distilled in copper pot stills and other parts distilled in a copper Coffey column still (a Coffey still is usually used for Irish whiskey) – then aged in ex bourbon oak casks for various periods of time then blended to profile. This is the oldest (but newest edition to their line) of the Mt Gay line the youngest being Mount Gay Eclipse Silver, an older sibling of the Mount Gay Eclipse , and the former oldest Mount Gay Extra Old. Mount Gay Rum is produced by Mount Gay Distilleries Ltd. of Barbados, the easternmost island of the West Indies. The oldest surviving deed for the company is from 1703, making Mount Gay Rum the world's oldest commercial rum distillery. [1] The current majority shareholder of Mount Gay Distilleries since 1989 is Rémy Cointreau. [2] [3] Mount Gay Rum is sold in 110 countries, [4] and its primary export market is the United States of America. [5] History [ edit ] In the mouth: Confectionary and fruits! Very pleasant mouthfeel and very easy to drink. What I taste is very similar to the nose, except the cinnamon and vanilla are more vocal upfront. They’re also accompanied by an undertone of clove. Then I get mostly marzipan, dried apricots, butterscotch, toffee, orange peels, orange jam, lemon-flavored Nerds and honey. Some marzipan and coconut sugar syrup sneak up from behind too. Score: 6/10 Conclusions For over three hundred years, the distinct and pure character of Mount Gay rums has come from distillation in traditional column and copper pot stills. A ground-breaking distillation technique in 1703, this process has been in continuous use by Mount Gay ever since.Mount Gay Eclipse rum has a very distinctive flavour. There are other rums made on the island, but Mount Gay is the oldest and most prominent. [16] It’s all very nice and polite and very nicely balanced. But its just not overly exciting. I think at this price point we need more from Mount Gay. They need to get out of that comfort zone. A re-brand is all very nice but they must be looking at Foursquare. St Lucia Distillers, Worthy Park and even Plantation and thinking – we must spice things up. We need to change, innovate, maybe try some different finishes – up the ABV (this is 43%) and just offer something more exciting and more 2018.

Since this is a brand that gets more distribution, I hope Malt readers looking for Malternatives will try some of these.Compared to Jamaica for example, there are very few pure pot still rums from Barbados, and what little we have got comes all from the independent bottlers (with the deceased Mount Gilboa and the Mount Gay Origins as the only exceptions I am aware of).
