Pioneer DDJ-200 Review - MusicTech Pioneer DDJ-200 Review - MusicTech

The DDJ-200 doesn’t feature a microphone input so you won’t be able to use your mic with the device unless you are using an external audio mixer. The conclusion:The DDJ-200 is a unique controller to set up with speakers and headphones. As the controller has no audio connections, the speakers actually connect to the phone, tablet or computer. The included splitter cable allows for both the headphones and speakers to connect to just the one headphone port. Some phones will need a headphone adaptor to connect the splitter cable. A DJ controller combines all the equipment DJs need into one single unit. Rather than buying a mixer and two players separately, all the gear combines into one sleek device. Overall whether it’s your first DJ controller, you search for a sturdy DJ controller for your curious kid or you want to find some portable gear for mobile usage the Pioneer DDJ-200 will be a great choice. What Equipment Do You Really Need To DJ? – Gear Recommendations Both devices feature only 2 mixer channels.

As basic as controllers get, The Pioneer DDJ 200 doesn’t have the best build that’s mostly made of plastic. What can you expect at this price point? For what you pay, you get a whole lot more than you bargained for. It’s still got the pro-layout and feel of top-tier Pioneer DJ DJ controller. A long time favourite amongst the mobile DJ community, Algoriddim’s fantastic DJay application (read our review here) is probably best known for its Spotify streaming integration. With Pioneer DJ not releasing the WeDJ on iPad yet, Algoriddim Djay will become the leading contender for using an iPad with the DDJ 200. A set up we enjoy due to the larger screen and magnetic stands currently available. The app does standard mixing stuff like loops, hot cues, and pre-cueing. It’s also got fantastic performance additions. You can override this if you need, but it works well, and we never felt the need to adjust it. The app will also analyse and set beat grids required for Sync. Especially with the new phrase sync mode, its essential these grids are correctly set, and we found ourselves having to adjust them on more than one occasion manually. Thankfully this is easy enough to do and takes little time thanks to the intuitive controls. All in all, this is a fantastic little app that brings the best out of the controller! For the simplest connection to your source, go for a wireless, Bluetooth connection. Or, if you prefer to be wired in, simply plug the DDJ-200 into your PC, Mac, tablet or smartphone with a USB cable, or connect to your iPad or iPhone with a Lightning cable and start mixing your music using the compatible DJ software or app of your choice. Our dedicated Pioneer DDJ 200 course is our most comprehensive to date with lessons covering WeDJ on iPhone and Android, Algoriddim Djay on iPad and Rekordbox on a laptop! If your phone or computer doesn’t have an optimal sound card, the music won’t sound terrific. You are rolling the dice on your audio fidelity each time you connect a device to the Pioneer DDJ 200.

The DDJ-200 is much smaller and much more compact than the DDJ-400 as it is made with mobile devices in mind. It is meant to be used with smartphones and tablets and carried around in a bag. While targeting mobile devices the DDJ-200 can also be used with the Rekordbox software on your PC or your laptop. Using your phone for mixing on the Pioneer DJ DDJ 200 is pretty radical, albeit a little too consumerized for some professional DJs’ tastes. DJs can mix on either their mobile device (with a mixing app & streaming services) or computer (using Pioneer’s Rekordbox DJ.) In our current technocratic age, everyone has a smartphone. Not everyone has a suitable laptop for mixing. I was pleasantly surprised at the jog wheels’ quality. I thought at this price point Pioneer would sacrifice their construction. That doesn’t seem to be the case. They’re very responsive to scratching and beat nudging.

The faders feel a little cheap, but they are relatively smooth and tactile. There is no gain knobs on each channel, which still perplexes me. A mixer without gain controls?!?! That’s how you know it’s a super entry-level model. The app records your mixing, which is perfect for posting on Soundcloud to gain a following. The app is free to install for this smart DJ controller, but to get all the extra goodies; you’ll have to pay in-app charges. Mixer Section and Controller Controls The controller comes with a headphone splitter that starts from your phone or laptop and splits to your headphones and speaker, both using 3.5mm outs. You can’t, therefore, connect to a pair of speakers without a mixer, or a 3.5mm to RCA cable. The DDJ 200 is powered via the USB B port on the rear. Using the included USB cable, you can use any 5v USB adaptor to power the unit on, we find spare phone chargers work great. Laptop users won’t have to worry about powering the DDJ 200 as the USB cable used to connect to the laptop also charges at the same time.

Advanced models include 4-channels or more and come with all the bells and whistles proficient DJs want to make their mix masterful. If you are tight on the budget you might be considering compensating for the DDJ-400 price by buying it used. Keep in mind that there are many risks that come along with getting used DJ equipment. The DDJ-200 does not feature pad mode selection buttons so for changing the behavior of the pad section mid-performance you will have to use your mobile device’s screen. There is no dedicated sound FX section on the DDJ-200.
