Pretty Green" includes a funk bassline and rhythm with melodic guitar breaks and psychedelic sound effects. In fact, the more you consider the album, the better it is, yet the more confused you are as to why. The dark soundscape of “Scrape Away” is marked by an ominous bass riff from Foxton and excellent rhythmic management from Buckler, who punctuates the song’s stuttery beats with plenty of rim shots.

The Gift features a more eclectic approach involving multiple styles, including funk, soul and splashes of jazz. The band’s musicality blossoms in the gloomy daydreams and Who-like harmonies of “Monday,” but the centerpiece is “That’s Entertainment,” an affectionately melancholic sketchbook of blue-collar London. The in situ creation of "Sound Affects" resulted in an inconsistent record with different moods and atmospheres unique to each track, giving a slightly incohesive feel.It is therefore difficult to look at the album as inconsistent " virtually every track is memorable " even semi-instrumental "Music For The Last Couple" is memorable, though this time through it"s funky guitar and bass riffs.

Siebert’s claim that post-punk bands like Joy Division and Gang of Four had a greater influence on Sound Affects than the King of Pop is much more plausible. Several times he makes self-deprecating reference to his 'star' status (Boy About Town) and also the acceptance of the healing power of love (But I'm Different Now). All involved are reassured and given hope via the sacred notion that “God created all men equal,” which the characters take to mean that they have a legitimate shot at rising to a status higher than someone else.I’m pretty sure that their thinking had something to do with the not inaccurate perception that the socio-cultural criticism featured in “Pretty Green” was “on brand,” consistent with the image the band had cultivated on All Mod Cons and Setting Sons. At the time of its release, he said that he considered the album a cross between Off the Wall and Revolver. This, their fifth effort, often vies for the title of their best; the other candidate of course being 1978's All Mod Cons. The Jam was a punk/ mod revival group formed in Woking, England in 1972 consisting of Paul Weller (vocals, guitar), Bruce Foxton (bass, vocals) and Rick Buckler (drums).
