The tome ends with a plotting model for writers called the Sacred Flaw approach, which is probably the most well explained character development tool I've worked with - and doesn't preclude using any of the other useful plotting tools out there. Have you ever wondered why we, as humans, are so drawn to hearing (or reading) great stories? And why is it that some stories easily captivate people while others fade into darkness? In a now-famous essay, Y Combinator co-founder Paul Graham argued for dividing a working day up into maker and manager time.

The best book on the subject I've read. Quite brilliant' Tony Jordan, creator/writer, Life on Mars, Hustle In Star Wars, Luke meets Obi-Wan Kenobi who then explains to Luke how he can escape his ordinary life and go on an adventure to rescue a princess. Discover in this book how you can craft and deliver stories that make the brain of your listener unable to shift the focus from you to something else. He’s a character we can empathise with. You don’t need to love science fiction either to understand Luke’s arc in this film. Those that realize that human brains are organic machines that respond in somewhat predictable, researchable ways to stimuli, so if a writer wants to capture the reader's attention, surprise them or in general affect them reliably, there might be scientific studies out there that suggest how to do so. My favorite of this category might be Lisa Cron's 'Wired for Story', but I can't recall any other at the moment. Facts and figures don’t have faces. It’s information that (most likely) we forget in a matter of minutes. Writers and creative professionals can use the former to attend to business and the latter for deep work, like writing or coding.

Instead of going on about acts like most books that get into plotting, the author considers that you should focus on figuring out different stages of that main character's development, in which he or she is a "different" person.I’m not a fictional writer and yet, I often use stories in my books and courses. There is no better way to make your point than a story. There is no better way to influence your audience (of one or many) than a story.

There are plenty of examples from books, movies and TV shows to illustrate the points being made and the fact that Storr primarily looks at the neurological and psychological facets of storycraft makes this a wholly unique read. I feel anyone who writes or is planning to write a novel of any genre would find this helpful. Knowing some of the reasons behind why certain books I've enjoyed have become so critically acclaimed helps a reader to understand different aspects of the plot. Because of this book, I will never think about a novel in the same way again. The whole crux is what Storr calls a sacred flaw (He devotes the Appendix to it). The character controls his own little world, as we all must or go crazy. In that world the character is safe, secure, and most of all, right. It is the theory of control. Something happens to shake that control and that theory, and so begins a fight, an adventure, a chase, an investigation, a crusade, a campaign…. This is of course just life. The world and the universe are constantly changing. Anyone who holds to an unshakeable position will prove to be sadly mistaken. No matter who you are or what you perceive, it works until it doesn’t, and you have to adjust the theory to fit the new reality. I write the NYPD Detective Chiara Corelli Mystery series featuring Corelli and her partner Detective P.J. Parker. Most mysteries have a single main character so I’m passionate about finding other authors who write mysteries with two professional investigators as main characters. It’s fascinating to see how authors writing the same type of characters handle them and what they do about character growth over the course of the series. To me, watching two characters react to each other, seeing their relationship change over the course of a book or a series is much more interesting than reading about a single detective.Wired for Story: The Writer’s Guide to Using Brain Science to Hook Readers from the Very First Sentence – Lisa Cron Those around you live through an overload of information. Software developers love to question the assumptions that underpin their practice. Some of the most exciting phases of my career have come about as a result of such questions. Often they are revolutionary in the literal sense that they ask you to turn your thinking upside down – to design systems from the bottom up rather than the top down, for example, or to write your tests before your components.I may not adopt every practice, but each challenge enriches the conceptual world in which I work. Over the years, I have come to look for similar shifts and inversions across other subject areas. Here are some recommendations from my reading. Demonstrate the before and aftertransformation via pictures or videos e.g. think testimonials from happy clients of a personal trainer Many of us have preconceived ideas about what we can do and what we can learn. Writing a good story is like learning to play chess. It sounds a bit mystical and intimidating. Yet, once you start, you cannot stop. I am a child psychologist and an award-winning author of several books for children and teens related to emotions, behavior, and the science behind them. I believe children love to see themselves in books and to learn about others. Making complex information clear and watching children light up with understanding is my goal for every book I write. Any embarrassing moment in your life, put in the context of a story, becomes a funny story to tell.
