Also if you deal with any form of claustrophobia, fair warning, there are parts of this book that will definitely trigger that. The bluntness of all that telling hammers home the book’s plot and themes, which makes it easier for younger readers to follow. What does "conservative" mean when South Asians were actually deemed by Europeans as scandalous/promiscuous for wearing sarees that exposed their bellies? Perfect for fans of Stalking Jack the Ripper and Girl in the Blue Coat, this high-seas heist from the author of The Henna Wars is an immersive story that makes readers forget one important detail--the ship sinks. Although aimed at young readers, I think this is more suited for 14 and above because there is a small amount of swearing and some challenging vocabulary.

But they feel any, and all inherent risk is proportional to the reward and proceed with the task at hand, certainly not accounting for a Force Majeure type of situation, like say, colliding with a giant iceberg. I was excited to see her take on a different genre, but to my disappointment, A Million to One read as a half-baked, flimsy excuse for a heist. The characters in this supernatural odyssey are well-drawn, the plotting is brilliant and just when you think you know where the story is going, Mr.We are told she misses the food from home but we aren’t told anything else and honestly I’m a bit confused about her character and background. Josefa is a rich white girl who ran away from the comfort of her wealth because she felt suffocated and bored, and started stealing because it made her feel free. I thought she was antagonistic for no reason and this frustrated me to no end while reading the book. Adiba Jaigirdar, author of one of Time's Best YA books of all time, gives Titanic an Ocean's 8 makeover in this nail-biting heist set onboard the infamous ship. Everything that should have been interesting about this novel—getting the gang together, the Titanic setting, carrying out the heist, the romance—was glossed over in favor of a good 100 pages of dithering in between each major plot point.

If you're in the market for a diverse heist novel, I would instead recommend The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi or Portrait of a Thief by Grace Li.

They all had their reasons for carrying out this heist and I wanted them to succeed and get what they want/need from it. But I do think it's funny that Jaigirdar joined in on the discourse given the problematic content in her own book lmao). There are some excellent twists and turns which make it even more of a page turner – and I loved the fact that it wasn’t a ‘simple’ romance.
